The concert of Wolf-trio

Finally we can play our piano trio concert with music of Brahms, Mozart, Wolf and Dolinsek. We have waited this for one and half years!

Concerts in Turku for the tenth anniversary of the city’s year as the European Capital of Culture

In the beginning of August I will be playing many interesting concerts in Turku, Finland. In 2021, Turku celebrates the tenth anniversary of the city’s year as the European Capital of Culture, and two projects of ours were chosen to be part of the anniversary program.

String duo Kleio will perform two concert programs on the special performance venues of the city of Turku the 2nd and the 7th of August. In addition to that we will appear in the Puolala, Kupittaa and Samppalinna parks with light summery program the 4th, 5th and 6th of August, always at 17:00 o’clock.

For our second project we are happy to expand our duo into a trio: Cellist Juhana Ritakorpi will join us for the musical fairy tale “Magic keys” for children. I wrote this story a few years ago, and am totally happy, that we can perform it in Turku. The performance includes music, drama and also the children can participate by singing and so on. There are four performances in Kupittaa park: the 5th of August at 11 and at 13 o’clock, and the 6th of August also at 11 and at 13 o’clock.

The work grant of The Finnish Music Foundation

I have been given a work grant by The Finnish Music Foundation. It’s a great timing, because there are a lot of nice concerts coming in June!
During the Lieto chamber music festival I’ll be playing in two concerts: 20.6. there will be a concert of Odysseus String quartet, and it seems, that we can even welcome some live audience! The “Midsummer concert” will be streamed the 26th of June.
I will be also participating the Iittala Music festival, where the 18th of June the Odysseus String quartet will play music of Wilhelm Stenhammar, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the composer.

Easter music

On Good Friday I was suddenly blessed with the opportunity to play three times in front of real people! The two services of the Evangelical church of Pörtschach took place outside, because so many people wanted to participate. Luckily the heat wave had not completely left the Southern part of Austria yet! Our String duo Kleio played during the services music of Platti and Glazunov among others, and the “Improvisation” we prepared specially for this occasion after the chorale “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden”. Bach used this chorale in his St. Matthew Passion, and in Austria it’s sang every Easter, except that this year singing is forbidden.

In the evening I had a pleasure to lead the five-member-ensemble playing movements of “Die sieben letzten Worte” of Joseph Haydn during the service of the Freie Evangelikale Gemeinde Klagenfurt. Even though it was not possible to have many people in the church, it was touching to feel the presence of those who were there, and the service was streamed, so much more people were luckily able to participate online.

The miniatures of Glazunov

While it’s still impossible to play concerts, we decided to make a little serie of recordings. Glazunov composed these duos originally for clarinet with various other instruments. The arrangement for the String duo Kleio was made by Ivan Podyachev. More videos, recordings and information about the String duo Kleio you can find at www.duokleio.com.

Wolf Trio in youtube

The concerts of the celebration year of Hugo Wolf (2020) were unfortunately postponed already two times, and we keep hoping, that there will still come a time, that we can play for the live audience our piano trio -program including trios of Mozart, Brahms, Dolinšek and new arrangements of songs of Hugo Wolf. Meanwhile we made already a second distance recording: “Aroma” is a beautiful composition of our pianist Davorin Dolinšek. It is one movement of his “Meditation, Aroma and Breeze” op.7. He plays the piano with us.

I add here also the earlier recording: “Wohl kenn’ ich Euren Stand”, a song by Hugo Wolf arranged by Ivan Podyachev

Music life after (between) corona restrictions

After many months of silence in the concert halls, the music life in Austria is little by little waking up again. Finally I ended up playing three concert during last week, with different but very interesting programs.
First of all was a String duo Kleio recital in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. This church concert was since the beginning planned to be held the 15th of August, when the church is celebrating it’s patron saint, virgin Mary. For the occasion we made a duo version of the 14th of the Rosary Sonatas of H. F. I. Biber, that is dedicated to the assumption of virgin Mary. Other composer names were Mozart, Martinu and Paganini.
The 20th of August was a world premiere of a church film opera “Jeanne d’Arc” by J. Kalitzke. The massive performance was organised by the festival Carintische Sommer, and I was playing violin in Kärntner Sinfonieorchester conducted by the composer himself. Link
Finally the 22nd of August I had a great honor to play with the legendaric concert master of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Rainer Küchl. He was a concert master in the chamber orchestra conducted by the young, talented Emmanuel Tjeknavorian in a concert that was part of concert series “Klassik im Burghof” in Klagenfurt.

A grant from Finnis Cultural Foundation

I have been given a grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation for buying a baroque violin and bow. The timing couldn’t have been better, as I am just at the moment hosting as a member of the class of historical string instruments of Susanne Scholz in Graz University of Performing arts, a symposium about Jacob Stainer, and reproduction of six replicas made after a model from the year 1668, that is considered to be one of the best and most probably in original baroque form survived violin of Stainer’s. Learning to know and being able to play these instruments of well known luthiers, who come from three different countries and are specialised in historic instruments, is a privilege, and extremely pleasant. Also meeting in person the violin makers, being able to make questions, and hearing the lectures and conversations has been most interesting. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful… times.

Mozart at the Sibelius Academy

On Saturday the 26th of October, there will be a public examination of the doctoral thesis of violist Markus Sarantola at the Sibelius Academy, and I have a great pleasure to be playing the Divertimento KV 563 with Markus and cellist Jussi Seppälä in this occasion. Markus has been doing research about performance practice of earlier music in symphony orchestras.
The examination is open for public, and will take place at the Wegelius hall of Sibelius Academy at 17:00.
